Retired U.S. District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf Delivers Closing Remarks at Boston Law Day Event Celebrating the Rule of Law
Retired U.S. District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf, senior counsel at Todd & Weld LLP, delivered the closing address at a Law Day rally held on May 1 at Boston Common, where members of the legal community convened in recognition of the importance of the rule of law.
The annual event brought together attorneys, judges, and civic leaders, including the Presidents of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Boston Bar Association, the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and the LGBTQ Bar Association, as part of the nationwide Law Day of action. The gathering underscored the importance of a shared commitment within the legal profession to uphold democratic institutions and the independence of the judiciary.
In his remarks, Judge Wolf spoke about the existential threat to the rule of law and emphasized the essential role lawyers, as well as judges, play in maintaining constitutional governance. His address echoed themes he recently explored in an opinion piece published in The Boston Globe, in which he examined growing threats to the independence of the legal profession and the judiciary in the United States.
In that piece, Judge Wolf noted that the strength of American democracy depends on lawyers’ willingness to advocate for clients without fear of reprisal and on courts’ ability to enforce limits on governmental power. He highlighted the historical role of attorneys in defending civil liberties and warned of the broader implications when legal institutions are weakened.
Judge Wolf’s participation in the Boston Law Day event reflects Todd & Weld’s ongoing engagement with issues at the intersection of law, public service, and the administration of justice.
