Todd & Weld attorneys participated in a settlement for $8.4 million arising out of a massive fire in a commercial building in Newton, Massachusetts that claimed the lives of six people.
The claims against the owner of the building included that the building was unreasonable dangerous and lacked sufficient means of escape that caused the decedents to become quickly trapped in the building. The claims against a fire alarm company were based on the fact that it stopped working on installation of a fire alarm system in the building one month prior to the fire due to a payment dispute. This caused a significant delay in alerting the building's occupants and the fire department of the fire.
