Richard M. Novitch

Biography

A partner at the firm, Richard M. Novitch represents clients in all aspects of domestic relations law, including complex matrimonial matters, and high net worth property division.  He has significant experience in business valuations, allocation and valuation of employee benefits, and allocation of family trusts.  Mr. Novitch has tried numerous cases in Probate and Family Courts in Massachusetts, and has extensive experience handling complex cases and issues on appeal, including matters before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and Massachusetts Appeals Court.

Representative cases in which Mr. Novitch has been involved include:

  • Chin v. Merriott, 470 Mass. 527 (Supreme Judicial Court 2015) (filed amicus brief)
  • Belanger v. Bettano, Mass. Appeals Court (2017, unpublished opinion) (persuaded court to reverse a custody judgment and to remand case for a new trial)
  • Brookes v. Brookes, 84 Mass. Appeals Court 1133 (2014) (affirming trial court's division of assets and quantum of alimony)
  • Alexander v. Alexander, 72 Mass. Appeals Court 1118 (2007) (affirming trial court's refusal to allocate inheritied assets and imputation of income to spouse)
  • Sweeney v. Sweeney, 2005-J-0422 and 2006-J-0521 (2006) (reversing trial court's temporary order on child support, and affirming modification of increased parenting time to father)

Mr. Novitch previously served as a staff attorney for the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and was a law clerk for the Massachusetts Superior Court and Massachusetts Probate & Family Court.  He is a former hearing officer for the Board of Bar Overseers.

He helped draft legislation to simplify post-judgment proceedings seeking to modify custody and child support. Mr. Novitch is a frequent lecturer on family law issues for the Boston Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association, and Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education.
