Max D. Stern co-authored an op-ed article in the Boston Globe advocating criminal sentencing reform in the wake of a study showing high rates of incarceration in Boston's minority neighborhoods.
The article calls for repealing mandatory-minimum sentences and allowing judges to sentence individuals to community-based alternatives to prison in appropriate cases. Incarceration, for example, can compound problems for prisoners with substance-use and mental health conditions, according to the article. Supervising them safely in the community can reduce recidivism.
Mr. Stern, a partner at the firm, concentrates his practice on criminal defense. He is a co-chair of the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Reform Coalition, and past president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
