The representation of a transgender client by Elizabeth Roberts of Todd & Weld LLP was cited in an article entitled “Improving Advocacy for Transgender Clients” which appeared in the Winter 2012 edition of GLAD BRIEFS.
The article described the unique needs and vulnerabilities of transgender people in the family law context, and, in particular, highlighted a case in which Ms. Roberts, a family law attorney, represented the grandparents of a transgender child in a custody dispute. The case was referred to Ms. Roberts, who is an active member of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association, by GLAD. She immediately understood what was at stake and stated, “This case is about protecting a transgender child-that's the crux.” There were huge safety issues for the child, both physical and psychological.
Ms. Roberts negotiated a final agreement with which her clients are very satisfied.
